A common issue we find at AWP Boiler Installations during the peak winter conditions in Solihull and the West Midlands are frozen condensate pipes. If your boiler is not working in freezing temperatures there is a likelihood your condensate pipe is frozen.
Why do condensate pipes freeze?
If your condensate pipe discharges outside and is either undersized or not insulated there is a good chance it can be frozen, leading to a boiler malfunction. If applicable, your boiler may display one of the following error codes to indicate a frozen condensate pipe:
Look for a white PVC pipe outside which is plastic and leads back to the boiler.
Pour warm water (not boiling) along the length of the pipe where it exits the building.
Reset your boiler.
You can get in touch with us at AWP Boiler Installations and we can check if your condensate pipe is discharging correctly and safely, is of sufficient size in diameter and sufficiently insulated.
How to prevent a frozen condensate pipe?
To minimise the risk of a frozen pipe, insulate the external pipe and install a drain cover where it meets the mains services to protect the pipe from frost. For assistance in Solihull and nearby areas, contact us at AWP Boiler Installations today, we can ensure your condensate discharge is correct and working to manufacturer requirements alone, or whilst performing a boiler service.
